Flagrantly Anorexic is both a memoir and a call to action. It recounts in detail my struggle with anorexia, but this book is also a demand to create a new mental health system that treats eating disorders and all mental illnesses with effective, evidence-based treatment.
Despite great fear and trepidation, I decided to write this book so that others battling mental illnesses and eating disorders will never be subjected to the nightmares I endured.

Broken into four parts, Flagrantly Anorexic recounts in detail my struggle with anorexia, but in the end it isn’t a book about me. It’s about the 30 million Americans affected by eating disorders, and the 1 in 5 Americans experiencing a mental illness and the inadequate treatment the vast majority will receive. It’s about why we need to create a mental health system that treats mental illnesses including eating disorders with proven, evidence-based treatments rather than with hucksterism and witchcraft. And I say “create” a mental health system rather than “reform,” because in my experience we don’t have a mental health system. We have to start by repairing a fragmented approach to providing quality mental health care.

EXCERPT ONE: At 16 I was committed by court order into a psych ward, accused by the judge of being “flagrantly anorexic.” As an adult I suffered the mental torture of being “treated” in an eating disorders clinic, where I was subjected to phony hypnosis therapy that claimed my illness stemmed from childhood sexual abuse and my participation in a satanic cult. Throughout this nightmare I was failed by a negligent insurance “industry” that sanctioned the lunacy of a dysfunctional “mental health system” staffed by incompetent treatment “professionals” who understood neither the complexities of anorexia nor humane and effective ways to treat it.
EXCERPT TWO: Never once did I offer him [Mr. Roarke] a memory of any of this, but interpretation of my artwork assured him that abuse was in my past, he told me. Again, he was the only one skilled enough to uncover such severe trauma.
He sat next to me on his couch, interpreting one of my drawings. As abstract as it was, he drew his finger over it and said, “A cult. You are a member of a satanic cult.” He assured me we could get through this. He had worked successfully on countless similar cases. He gave me reading materials on the subject. I believed he was telling me the truth.
Although he insisted I was a cult member, I failed to remember the details that he claimed hypnosis revealed. Terrifying accounts of my involvement in torture and murder. Fearsome rituals where I participated in sacrificing and eating children at each solstice. I was shattered to pieces by the horrors he recounted after he brought me out of my subconscious.

My mission is three-fold. First, to eradicate the unhealthy, toxic stigma surrounding mental illness. Second, to encourage those of us who have personally (or know someone who has personally) been affected by the current "mental health system" to take action. Finally, to nurture the hope inside of all of us. Together we have the power to make a change and fight for the treatment and diginity we deserve. To accomplish these goals, I advocate for:
